History
The first official record of the City of Wildwood's incorporation is contained in the Acts of the Legislature, Chapter 3968, which indicates the Florida Legislature validated the incorporation on May 16, 1889.
Legend has it that Wildwood was named for the abundant native vegetation that laborers encountered while working on the city’s early transportation and communications infrastructure. Long known as the crossroads of Florida, Wildwood has been an important connection point for those traveling to and from other parts of the state.
The city’s growth has been largely attributed to the arrival of the railroad in 1883, which facilitated commerce and tourism and fueled the local economy. Over the years, Wildwood has maintained its small-town charm while growing into a thriving community known for natural beauty and friendly residents.
Home to an increasing portion of The Villages®, Wildwood was named by U.S. World and News Report as the nation’s Fastest Growing Place in 2025-2026.
